Spring is in the air – and so is that dust and dirt that accumulated in your house over the winter season. Need to refresh your home with a good spring clean? Here are 8 easy spring-cleaning tips that will give you a head start into the upcoming season.

 Scout it out

Take a walk through your home and make a checklist, room by room, of what you need to clean. This will help you develop an organized plan attack of what and when you need to schedule your cleaning, instead of feeling overwhelmed.

Declutter

It’s a proven fact that a disorganized home adds to your stress level, so let’s get rid of the clutter. Sort cluttered areas of the house and workspaces into four categories: trash, give away, store, or put away.

Cleaner cleaning

When it comes to cleaning products, there’s no need to wipe out the store’s inventory. Your home will still be fresh and clean with an excellent all-purpose cleaner and microfiber cloths. And lean toward green cleaning products, like a steam cleaner, so cleaning is less toxic. Buy specialty cleaning supplies as needed.

Work from top to bottom

Starting from the ceiling and working down to the walls and windows, furnishing, and, finally, the floor, will force debris downward, contain the collection of dust, and save you time. If your vacuum has an extension hose, don’t forget to suck up any cobwebs and dust covering your ceiling fan blades first.

Work your way through the kitchen and bathroom

These two heavy-use rooms in the house can be intimidating, but not if you have a cleaning “game plan.” For the kitchen: Wipe down cabinets and appliances; clean and organize your fridge (throw away old items), wiping down all shelves; organize your pantry; wipe down counters and under cabinets. For the bathroom: Change out your shower curtain and liner; wipe down shower/tub/sink/toilet; and go through drawers and medicine cabinet, throwing away anything expired.

Get a breath of fresh air

Your spring-cleaning session could also be a good reminder to refresh ventilation throughout your home, such as installing or updating your bathroom fan and replacing your HVAC filters with high-rated filters. Maybe even consider purchasing an air purifier for the upcoming allergy/pollen season.

’Tis the season

This is also a great time to check some seasonal chores off your list before summer arrives, such as cleaning the grill, and power washing the siding, windows, and patio. Indoors, store away winter clothing and bedding and replace them with spring things.

Make it fun!

And make it a family affair, by assigning small tasks to younger members of the family. Throw in some challenges and incentives and even put on some music to lighten the mood.
