The Myrtle Beach area is conveniently located within a two- to three-hour drive from a few fabulous cities that you and your family could experience as fun day trips. Here are three we recommend: to the south, there is Mount Pleasant and historic Charleston, South Carolina; to the north, there is Wilmington, North Carolina; and to the west, there is the South Carolina state capital of Columbia.
Check out the deeper dive into this trio of day trip destinations, with some ideas of what to see and do while you’re at each one!
CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA
Charleston oozes charm and history at every turn on the city’s cobblestone streets lined with centuries-old live oaks that drip with Spanish moss. You could easily spend more than a day here, with all of the oodles of activities the city has to offer your family. Choose to stroll along The Battery promenade and Waterfront Park that overlook Charleston Harbor; hop aboard a boat tour across the harbor to explore Fort Sumter, where the first shots of the Civil War rang out; shop at the city’s famous farmers market or along the King Street Fashion District; visit the South Carolina Aquarium; or take a breathtaking walk along the majestic 575-foot-high, cable-stayed Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge that spans across the Cooper River for a length of 1,546 feet. And on the way home, explore Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum centered around the WWII aircraft carrier, the USS Yorktown, anchored in the Charleston Harbor.
WILMINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA
Situated just north of the South Carolina border is the port city of Wilmington, North Carolina. Here, you can enjoy the beauty of both the Cape Fear Coast beaches and downtown’s National Register Historic District that spans more than 230 blocks. The city’s nationally award-winning, two-mile Riverwalk winds along the Cape River and is lined with shops, bars, café’s, restaurants, and more. Meander further into Wilmington’s downtown for more restaurants, galleries, and unique boutiques or explore the streets via horse-drawn carriage or trolley. Nearby, there are three island beaches – Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, and Wrightsville Beach – known for surfing, an aquarium, a vintage boardwalk, and cool vibes. Also nearby is the Battleship North Carolina, moored on the Cape Fear River, where you can explore WWII artifacts and history in every nook and cranny.
COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA
As the capital city of South Carolina, Columbia, surrounded by three rivers, hosts a playground of spectacular state museums and government buildings to tour and explore. Your day trip itinerary could include a visit to the South Carolina State House, the South Carolina State Museum, Columbia Museum of Art, EdVenture Children’s Museum, South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum, Fort Jackson, the Soda City Market, the Robert Mills House, or the Riverbanks Zoo & Garden, to name a few ideas. Columbia is also a college town, home to the University of South Carolina Gamecocks, so a day trip could also fall on game day for a football or basketball game!
