There is nothing more all-American than hosting a Fourth of July barbecue at your home for friends and family. It’s how more than 65 percent of Americans, in fact, celebrate the Fourth.
If you are planning to do the same, here are some tips for a star-studded menu, decorations, and entertainment for your barbecue to go off with a bang.
Menu Ideas
- Add a twist to the ’que classics. Fire up the grill and line it with the traditional holiday hamburgers and hot dogs, but add a creative twist with toppings in a build-your-own burger or dog style. Lay out options for your guests with a variety of gourmet cheeses, homemade relishes, veggies, assorted condiments, and toppings.
- Add a mix to drinks. Keep your guests of all ages hydrated. For those who are younger and prefer mocktails, mix up a pitcher of ice-cold strawberry or raspberry lemonade with floating blueberries for a pop of patriotic color. Offer frozen fruit ice cubes for an extra refreshing splash. And, for the adults, come up with a themed cocktail for the Fourth or serve frozen wine slushies to cool off on a hot summer day.
- Get fresh with sweets. And, for dessert, take advantage of the bounty of local summer fruits for a beautiful display of red, white, and blue with angel food or short cake and whipped topping. (Or have guests make their own personalized dessert!) Make patriotic popsicles, dip pretzel rods or strawberries in white chocolate and roll them in red and blue sprinkles, or fill up candy jars for a stars and stripes display.
Décor Ideas
- Show your true red, white, and blue colors. Hit a local party store and buy small, inexpensive flags, simple streamers, and balloons to decorate your heart out on a budget.
- Oh say can you see? For more detailed décor, string lights amidst your streamers at nightfall, scatter star stickers or confetti on tables, fill Mason jars or vases with fresh-cut flowers, or go the extra yard with patriotic candles, paper napkin rings, and tablecloths.
Entertainment Ideas
- Yankee doodle fun. For the kiddos, plan out fun-filled games and activities, such as a sidewalk chalk contest, a water balloon toss, face painting, water gun tag, or a watermelon seed-spitting contest.
- Grown-up fun. For the adults, set up yard games, like corn hole or bocce ball. Or, to celebrate the true meaning of the holiday, have a designated table with all of the supplies to write thank-you cards to our troops.
- Fire away! It’s not Independence Day without fireworks, but remember to keep things safe. For the wee ones who want to wave sparklers, weave the sparkler through a hole in the bottom of a plastic cup to avoid burns. And if you plan to create your own fireworks display, be sure to check local rules and safety ordinances before lighting up the night’s sky and to extinguish the used fireworks in water and dispose them in a metal trashcan after the grand finale.
